What we used for each treehouse:
This obviously varies tremedously, depending on your tree, but for the one above we used:
- 8 x 2m poles
- Lots of rope, including 4 bits 10m long
- 8 pallets (althought table tops would work as well)
This worked surprisingly well. Luckily it didn't rain otherwise the scouts would have got a bit wet! Wouldn't have been too much extra hassle to put a tarpaulin cover on top though.
Construction
Again, this depends largely on your tree, but for the one above:
- We started by putting in the vertical legs, then added two horizontal beams to make sure the floor would be flat.
- Other horizontal beams were added for balancing the floor on.
- Once the floor was down, we then added rope around 3 of the sides laced up and down all the way round to give the scouts a bit of security and mean they couldn't naturally roll out in the night!
Finding suitable trees was hard work - we did try building another one in another location on the campite, but couldn't get the proportions right. Spent a lot longer finding suitable trees than we did building the thing in the end. It is nice to find useful scouty things to do with pallets as opposed to making huge bonfires with them all the time though!
