Scramble Net
catapults

These things are very expensive to buy -we looked at getting one but were quoted around £1200, but if you know someone who owns a large one this was a memorable experience for some of our scouts. What we used:

  • A scout HQ or building with strong beams :)
  • 4 x 2m long poles
  • Lots of longish (10m) lengths of rope
  • 2 x 2m ladders
It was great fun sleeping on the scramble net, but it wasn't that comfy. We had loads of blankets, carrymats and mattresses underneath us which cancelled out most of the uncortableness. The other problem of course was that when one person rolled over, everyone else's bed moved as well. But all scouts did eventually get to sleep and hey, no one expects to get a perfect night's sleep on a scout camp do they?

Construction

  • The hardest bit was getting the first corner of the net in the air as it was so darn heavy. In the end I did a cunning pulley system.
  • It was then just a matter of going along each side lookping a rope over the beam and through some of the holes in the scrambhle net, trying to keep it tight. We did each side twice with two compeltely separate pieces of rope so on the very rare chance one piece of rope snapped we did still have another one holding it. No ropes did snap though - nor was I really expecting them
  • We propped two straight ladders next to each other against one of the beams and tied them on at the top and the bottom to provide a route down in case a scout needed to in the night. We put glowsticks all around the beams and down the ladders so they could see where to go.
  • Hot air rises apparently. Our very efficient heating system which is normally quite pleasant at ground level was waay too hot up in the roof. We turned it off the second night and the second group of scouts all moaned they were too cold. Not sure the answer to that one!
