What we used for the course:

Masses, to be honest. This year's supples were roughly:

  • 1.5km of rope
  • 50m of elastic bungee
  • 30 car tyres
  • Around 70 pioneering poles, as well as scout staves and other shorter poles
  • 50m (approx) of black plastic
  • 15 mattresses
  • 70 bike inner tubes
  • 6 ladders
  • Various tables, chairs etc that we have in the scout hq
Our biggest and most impressive pioneering project each year is our assault course. We spend around 2 days building it - scouts and parents come along to help (and test!) it. It is different every year, depending on the ideas that the scouts have about what they want to improve. There are a few common factors each year - one of the most common elements is the spiders web (below) which we build out of poles, rope and old bike inner tubes - the local bike shop collects these for me throughout the year!

You can see some of the other elements that we use by clicking on the picture above, or by clicking on a previous year's report. It is worth pointing out that although most of the construction has been done when that photo was taken, there was a lot of 'risk management' still be done - e.g. black plastic and safety ropes being put up to stop people falling from height etc.

This year we opened it up to young people from other local scout groups to use - we reckon we had over 200 young people using it during the week. Next year we have plans to increase that further!
